Role
of CAPACS in Blood Transfusion Services
Availability of safe blood and blood products is a basic requirement
of any health care programme. The risk of transmission of HIV and
other infectious agents by blood and blood products can best be
controlled by establishing Blood Transfusion Services that provide
for collection and banking of blood and the application of Quality
Assurance procedure on a routine and sustained basis. In order to
reduce the risk of transmission of infectious agents by blood transfusion,
it is important to advocate the policy of sage donors, safe blood
for transfusion and fewer transfusions. Chennai Corporation AIDS
Prevention and Control Society is working to achieve these in Government
Medical Institutions in Chennai city by supporting its blood banks.
At present CAPACS is supporting 11 blood banks of which 10 are run
by State Government and one at Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
Blood Component preparation facilities are existing in 3 blood banks
i.e in Government GH, Stanley Medical College Hospital, blood bank
and Dr. MGR Medical University. Apart from these blood banks 25
quasi Government / central / Volutnary and private blood banks are
also functioning in Chennai city.
