PPTCT
(Prevention
of Parent To Child Transmission of HIV
)
Parent to child transmission is by far the most significant route of transmission of HIV infection in children below the age of 15 years. HIV can be transmitted during pregnancy especially in the last trimester, during child birth, or breastfeeding. The efficiency of transmission from an infected mother to infant ranges between 15% to 25% in developed countries and between 25% to 45% in developing countries. This difference is largely attributed to infant feeding practices especially breastfeeding, universality of its practice and long duration of breastfeeding in developing countries than in the industrialized world.
The cost of effectiveness of PPTCT programme, as measured by the number of HIV infections averted in the babies born to seropositive women, may not be high since the prevalence of HIV in the community in most part of the country is still low; hence, the number of new born HIV infections averted would also be very low. However, as seen in this study, the programme becomes cost effective when primary prevention among 98.3% HIV seronegative antenatal women is considered as an important outcome indicator of the feasibility.
There are 19 prevention of parent to child transmission centres are functioning under the control of CAPACS and 3 PPTCTs under the control of TANSACS in Chennai corporation limit. This programme is being carried out the care Anti-natal and Obstetrical. The pregnant mothers are given counseling and the spouses also counseled. HIV+ve ANC cases are provided full medical care during the pregnancy period.
