The
alarming increase in the rise and spread of HIV infections in
Tamil Nadu is a major cause for concern. There is an acute need
to create awareness about this disease and provide special health
and support services for HIV infected patients. CAPACS (Corporation
AIDS Prevention and Control Society) was founded in 1998 to step
into this void and help in the prevention, management and care
of this disease. Formed under the directives of NACO – National
AIDS Control Organisation, it has made remarkable changes in this
area.
Headquartered
at Chennai, CAPACS has a three-fold objective - ‘Awareness,
Accessibility, Action’ – these three A’s are
the umbrella under which a wide range of activities are carried
out. Condom Promotion, Adolescent Clinics, Family Health Awareness
Campaigns and Anti Retroviral Therapy are some of the activities
carried out at CAPACS. The range of regular services include medication;
psychosocial support, clinical care, human rights education and
legal support to help the HIV-positive people create a network
for themselves.
CAPACS
through its dedication and efforts has so far helped create a
perceptible change in the quality of life of HIV patients through
health, counselling and support services. It has also been instrumental
in raising the levels of awareness about the disease and increasing
prevention measures. It works strategically to create a better
and safer tomorrow for the community.
